Down Syndrome Awareness Month, October 20th-25th

October 20th….

… Uniqueness…Every person is unique, and Veronika is Veronika 1st, she happens to have an extra chromosome(DS), and cerebral palsy, a congenital heart defect as well as other ‘diagnosis’ too. All people need to be referred to by their name, not a diagnosis they have.

Our children are unique flowers, that all together make a beautiful garden.

Please continue to share Veronika Will Walk and raise awareness for all people of all abilities, lets see if we can get to 900 following Veronika’s journey to health and mobility by the end of Down Syndrome Awareness Month ♥

October 21st….Down Syndrome Tasmania’s Buddy Walk….what better way to raise awareness than walk around Salamanca with our friends <3

October 22nd………..Education

There is no reason children with DS cant go to ‘mainstream schools’….and our family has been blessed with such a supportive school to launch into Veronika’s education in 2013. The school her brothers Jordan and Jakob go to.

Veronika 1st went to ECIS(her current school) the week after she was dischared from hospital after she was born, she was 7 week

s old, and the last 4 and half years, we have been preparing Veronika and myself for school, we were super blessed to have her current teacher from ECIS come today, to help settle Veronika in, as well as an occupational therapist, who brought along the equipment Veronika will need for kinder…and they both talked with the teacher and teacher assistants about how they can help Veronika in kinder next year ♥

October 23rd….3 Choices…

There are 3 choices we can make in life, Give up, give in, or give it all you’ve got…….you can guess which one we choose.

This is not just a choice we make once, but its a choice I often fi

nd myself making many times a day. Yes sometimes it would be easier to give up, but for me that’s not a choice I would like to make, so I continue to fight, push, encourage, and advocate every day. Veronika never gave up when she had her bilateral stroke(which should of killed her), so why should I ♥

October 24th….Hydrothereapy…

Veronika loves the water. It’s so good to help her with her severe hypotonia from her Down syndrome, and also helps relax her left side  affected by hemiplegia, cerebral palsy, so she can use her body in a more natural way.

The last few weeks Veronika has been working really hard trying to kick with her left leg, and has just started to break the surface of the water with her left foot, what an achievement.

October 25th…..nutrition(again)

Peolpe with DS often have food intollerances and digestive tract problems. Veronika has both. Veronika’s hypotonia( low muscle tone) is also in her bowels, and she is on a big dose of la

xatives daily, as directed by our Paed.As you know Veronika has severe multiple food intolerances. We are working closely with Veronika’s dietitian at the hospital. Veronika has been on the RPAH elimination diet and yesterday we introduced salicylate. As you can see Veronika wasn’t impressed by different looking food than what she has been having! She has reacted to the salicyates she’s had already yesterday and today, and as a result she is very unsettled and won’t go to sleep 🙁 so hopefully if she goes to sleep soon I will post more photos if not, hopefully might get a chance tomorrow.
